I wish I could say it surprised me to hear that, when in fact it is more rampant today than ever before it simply means there are not enough 
Hepatologist's or Gastrologist's 
to handle the growing numbers of hep c diagnosed patients today.
The projected increase due to awareness and advocacy work has proven to be very effective, but not to the point that it is no longer needed, it is more important today than ever before as your post suggests the physicians assistant is taking all of the overflow, and they are not qualified to visualize the entire picture. It is a shame that people are given the wrong information and might be led astray from doing the treatments that could possibly save their lives. It saddens me, and it has happened to me as well, nothing was maliciously intended but they are humans just like us and they are not without error. 
When a persons life is on the line if they don't have a computer or support group, they are lost in today's world, by the time the information so crucially needed is printed in books it has been outdated several times by new and improved testing facilities, treatments, and knowledge of the things you wrote about such as controlling depression.

The live, in your face support is crucial to reach these people with the right information and the tools it takes to make the treatment and side effects more tolerable just by knowing they are not alone. That is saving lives on the front lines of the battle. That is where people fall through the cracks and simply give up, that is why it is so important to be there.
Our medical community was not prepared to handle this epidemic, and it is up to us and many other forums and websites to get it out to the mass population as quickly and efficiently as possible. That is our goal and that is why we are here every single day, to do our best to be here for you.

That keeps all of us stronger when we reach out to another that comes here looking for friendship,hope, and kindness while learning with others that are very aware of your vulnerability in todays society and frightened about losing your life to this preventable disease you have found us and some real people that have been there done that and won the war on hep c.

What better way to go into battle alone or with people that are determined to help you fight with the power of knowledge and the power of love for their fellow man. Ok ! That wasn't my intention to get on stage and harp, dang I can't even play the radio" lol well it's Lou's fault lol" 
He started it and I ran with it ! see that's how we think and that's also why we have fought side by side for almost 5 years together, we are cool and we love you !!!!

But most importantly it is what God wants us to do. You might not see that side of me in chat tonight but that's ok you know who I am, and what I believe in with all my heart.
